Commissioned by Inner West Council - "Nawi" by Artist Joe Hurst.
Uncle Joe's Vision was to create a 4.5m bark canoe for the banks of the Cook's river, at Steel Park in Marrickville. Heritage Stoneworks (NSW Government) was engaged to materialise this vision using Sydney sandstone, stockpiled by the state government for use in historic building restoration.
The terms of project delivery were such that the Nawi was worked on periodically, over the course of two years. This granted sufficient time to live with the task, research, digest and collaborate with Uncle Joe to shape the rock, and make meaning.
